Audio now, video later
A digital system lets audio handsets become video ones at any later date. A common arrangement: the owners' association pays for the audio base, and an owner who wants video pays the difference for their own flat.

The door station
A station at the entrance with a camera and call buttons, in a finish that takes the weather and the occasional vandal. On request with a chip reader in the same frame, so one unit does entry and access.

A family house
For a house there are stand-alone kits: one door station and one or more indoor units. A video intercom shows who is at the door; an audio one is for talking to them and nothing more.

What happens to the existing wiring
Before any equipment is ordered we look at what is actually in the riser and what state it is in. A two-wire system tolerates old wiring, but not broken wiring — and that is the only thing that can hold a replacement up.

How long the entrance is without a bell
A replacement in one entrance is a matter of hours, not days: the old station down, the new one up, the units flat by flat. The date is announced in advance and any flat we cannot get into is finished on a second visit.

Who approves it in the building
An entry system is shared equipment, so the owners or the manager decide. The quote is itemised precisely so it can be put to the owners and so the base and the extra for video can be told apart.

Common questions
Questions about door entry
Do walls have to be chased?
With a two-wire system, generally not. The intercom wiring already in the building is reused, and what changes is the door station and the units inside the flats.
Can only some flats have video?
Yes, and that is what makes a digital system practical. The building has one base and a flat that wants video has it fitted — even a year later, without touching the other flats.
What if the building has an old four-wire system?
We look at what is actually in the riser. If a two-wire system cannot be connected, we say so before anything is bought, and set out what can be done instead.
Can the bell reach a phone?
Some systems can. It means an internet connection and an account with the maker, which in an apartment building is usually more administration than benefit; in a family house it is ordinary.
Does the outdoor station survive winter?
The outdoor station is built for it. What fails in winter sooner than the electronics is a badly sealed penetration through the wall, so that gets more time than the mounting does.
What about flats we cannot get into?
They are done on a second visit. The entrance works in the meantime: the old unit in that flat stays disconnected, but the bell and the door work for everyone else.
How long does it take?
Hours in one entrance, not days. Getting into the flats takes longer than the technology, which is why the date is announced in advance.
