Chip keys and entrance access

Opening the entrance door with a chip instead of a key. A lost chip is blocked in the system and the locks do not need changing — which is the whole reason it pays off in an apartment building.

Scope

What it covers

01

DEK — contact keys

The iButton, with a unique 48-bit serial number. They are on the way out: the reader's contact plate can be attacked with a stun gun or a nine-volt battery, which in a shared entrance is a real risk.

02

Contactless 125 kHz fobs

The replacement for contact keys, with a WIEGAND 26-bit output. The reader is potted in plastic and survives a shock. The advantage is contactless reading; the drawback is that they can be copied without authorisation.

03

Encrypted DESFire

The highest security of the three. Authorising the chip takes longer, but under a second, so nobody notices it at the door. The Beetle fobs are the ones most often used.

04

Locks and the record

An electromagnetic lock has no moving parts, so there is nothing to jam or wear out. The system can keep a record of who came in and when, which in an apartment building is the only way to find that out afterwards.

05

How many chips a building needs

The number is not guessed at: a flat, cleaning, the manager, the post, the meter readings. The list is drawn up before the work, because adding a chip is cheap while agreeing on one afterwards takes longer than the installation did.

06

What happens when one is lost

The lost chip is blocked in the system and the locks stay. That is the whole difference from a key: a lost key means a new cylinder and new keys for everyone, a lost chip means one deleted line.

07

The record and GDPR

A record of who came in and when is processing personal data. The building must decide who may see it and how long it is kept. The system can do it, but the decision belongs to the owners and into their resolution.

Common questions

Questions about chips

How many chips can one flat have?

As many as the owners agree. The system does not limit the number in any way an apartment building would notice; the limit is the owners' decision, not the technology.

What happens in a power cut?

The lock has a battery-backed supply, so the entrance still works. How the lock should behave on a fire alarm is a matter for the design — a door on an escape route must always open.

Can a chip be copied?

A 125 kHz fob can, and that is its known weakness. An encrypted DESFire cannot, with a copier anyone can buy. If copying is a problem in your building, that is the reason to choose DESFire.

Can a chip be added later?

Yes, at any time. A new chip is written into the system and starts working; nothing is replaced and nobody else needs to know.

Who can see the record of entries?

Only whoever the owners' association or the property manager names, and only for as long as they set. It is processing personal data, so it belongs in a resolution rather than a verbal arrangement.

Can it be combined with the door entry?

Yes, the reader can sit in the same frame as the door station. The entrance then has the bell and the access in one unit and one penetration through the wall.
