Television wiring
Distribution to every room from one place, whether from satellite, an aerial or a provider. The splitter is chosen for the number of outlets so the last one is not weaker than the first.

Why with the electrics
While the walls are open, data and television cable is just another run in the same chase. Getting them into a finished flat means chasing again, or running them on the surface in trunking.

Business premises and offices
In a shop, an office or a workshop the cabling is run together with the emergency lighting and the supplies for equipment, so the cabinet is built once rather than three times.

How many outlets and where
The number is settled before anything is chased: the television, the desk, the access point, a printer, perhaps a camera recorder. One more outlet costs a metre of cable; one added later costs chasing.

Cable category
An ordinary house needs cable that carries a gigabit over the whole run. A higher category earns its keep on long runs or where more than a gigabit is planned — otherwise it is paying for headroom nobody uses.

Where the cabinet goes
Every line comes back to one place with room for a router, a switch and a recorder. The cabinet is chosen with spare space and ventilation, because it is the one point that is worst to move later.

Questions about cabling
Is wifi not enough these days?
Wifi is convenient, but it depends on the walls and on who is transmitting next door. Cable to the television, to the desk and to the access point itself is what makes wifi a network you can rely on.
Can cabling be added to a finished flat?
It can, but at more cost and more disruption. Either the walls are chased again or it runs on the surface in trunking. That is why it is done with the electrical installation, while the walls are open.
Do you test the finished lines?
Yes, at handover. A badly terminated line behaves like a slow network and gets hunted for months — testing shows it at once, and which outlet is which port is written down.
What cable for a family house?
One that carries a gigabit over the whole run. A higher category earns its keep on long runs or where more than a gigabit is planned; otherwise it is headroom nobody uses.
Should wifi be replaced entirely?
It need not be. Cable belongs to the television, the desk and the access point — the rest is covered by wifi, which then finally has a proper connection behind it.

What is structured cabling?
A system where every outlet has its own cable back to one cabinet. The advantage is that it can be patched differently at any time without pulling anything again.
